How do I add files to my web site?
All files are sent to your web site using the File Transfer Protocol (more commonly abbreviated to "FTP"). You will need a few things in order to be able to upload your web site, as follows.
An Internet connection
You will need Internet access through an ISP to enable to send your files to your virtual web site via FTP. GoWeb does not offer dial-up or general Internet access services, but if you do not currently have an ISP (or you are not happy with the one you are using) you may like to check out our related service DIALix for affordable Internet access in Australia.
You are by no means obliged to dial-up directly to GoWeb to access your web site (in fact, generally speaking, you can't dial-up directly anyway). You can use any ISP from anywhere in Australia, or indeed anywhere in the world.
If you need an ISP in Australia, a fairly comprehensive (but unfortunately increasingly out of date) list can be found at the Australian ISP list.
Software that supports FTP
You will need some FTP software to enable you to send files to your web site over the Internet. Windows has built in command-line FTP software, but we suggest most users will be much more comfortable with FTP software with a graphical interface.
Two of the best known FTP programs for Windows are WS_FTP and CuteFTP.
We have an online tutorial for using CuteFTP. Since the interface in most FTP programs is actually very similar, you should find this helpful even if you're using a different FTP program.
For Macintosh, the Fetch program is probably the best known.
These days many web design programs also include built-in FTP support, so you may not need additional software at all. For example, programs like Dreamweaver, GoLive, Pagemill and FrontPage can transfer files to your site using FTP without the need for any other programs.
