Getting and Installing FileZilla

FileZilla can be obtained from several public software repositories, such as Tucows.

Once you get the installer file, double-click on it, to begin installation. After the installation process is complete, you should have an icon in your start menu, usually under Start / Programs / FileZilla, or an icon on your desktop. Click or double click on either of these to start up Filezilla.

Using FileZilla

Fill in the "Address:", "User:" and "Password:" fields with the details that we will have sent to you upon activation of your GoWeb Business plan.

Enter your hostname username & password

Click on the "Quickconnect" button. You will see some text scroll past in the message panel with some messages from the ftp server. Most of the time you can ignore these, although they can be helpful in diagnosing problems if they occur.

Once connected, you will see the contents of your directory on the web server in the right hand panel. The left hand panels indicate the files on your own computer.

connected

Using the panels on the left hand side, navigate to where you have saved your web pages. You can then select the files and/or directories that you wish to upload by highligting them in the lower panel.

You can highlight consecutive files/folders by holding down the Shift key then clicking on topmost file/folder, followed by the bottommost file in the list that you want to select.

If you want to select a few that are scattered about in the file listing, then hold down the Ctrl key while selecting each individual file.

If you want to select all the files in the directory that you are in, press Ctrl and A together to "Select All".

Select the files to upload

Upload the file(s) by dragging them from the left panel (your computer) to the right panel ( the web server).

When the process is complete, you will see that there is a copy of the files on the web server and you can check that they have had the desired effect by looking at your web site through a browser.

Don't be too alarmed if you dont see the changes you expected straight away, some times ISPs keep an "cache" a copy of web sites for a period of time in order to reduce internet traffic. If your ISP is doing this, you may have to wait several minutes (or even hours in extreme cases) to see the changes you have made, although often you can force your browser's cache to clear by holding down Shift and clicking on Reload or Refresh in your browser.
