What is a domain name and how can I get one?
A domain name is a customised Internet address that people can use to contact you on the Internet. A domain name can be used for your web site and your email address(es).
For example, Sublime IP Pty Ltd has a domain name "sublimeip.com.au". You can contact our web site at www.sublimeip.com.au or contact us by email at addresses such as example@sublimeip.com.au.
How much does it cost to get a domain name?
The cost varies depending on the type of domain name you choose. A full list of prices for domain registration in various countries can be found at the GoDomains price list.
Who "owns" a domain name registered with Sublime IP/GoDomains?
You do. We will register your preferred domain name to you based on the information you provide to us at registration time.
The domain name owner needs to be a registered Australian company or business in some cases (e.g. for "com.au" or "net.au" names). In most other cases, the applicant can be either an individual or an organisation and reside anywhere in the world.
Note that in practice domain names aren't "owned" as such by anyone, but by payment of the licence fee you will have use of the domain name for the licence period, and the option to renew the name at the end of the licence period to ensure continuous operation.
Can I move my domain name to another ISP?
Yes. Since you own your domain name, you are able to move (known technically as "re-delegate") your domain name to anywhere you like, should you choose to do so. We also offer a range of DNS hosting and management services (whether or not your web site or email are also hosted by us).
Our DNS servers span multiple systems, networks and continents for extremely high reliability and no single point of failure. For this reason, even if you're hosting your own mail or web servers, you may consider outsourcing your DNS management for better reliability and/or to avoid the need to maintain complex DNS services.
How long does it take to get a domain name registered?
This depends on the type of domain name ending you choose, but in most cases domain name registration is immediate.
The domain name information pages at GoDomains offer a guide the usual turn-around time for domain name registration.
Can I have more than one domain name?
Yes. You can in fact have as many domain names as you like, provided each name is paid for!
Some countries still have restrictions on some domain name endings that limit the number of names per legal entity. But in general, you can have as many domains as you feel you need.
I already have a domain name with a different ISP. Can I move it?
Yes. We can normally look after the moving process for you in a short amount of time. This process usually takes around 24 hours but can take a little longer with some domain name types.
We do not charge a redelegation fee for most domain name types if you are taking up hosting with us. Please contact us if you have one or more domain names you would like to redelegate to us.
Where can I find out more about domain names?
We have a specialist site at www.godomains.com.au with a lot more information about the prices and policies for various types of Internet domain names. You can also register a name online, quickly and securely.
